DESCRIPTION:ANACHRONISM…a thing belonging or appropriate to a period othe
 r than\nthat in which it exists\, especially a thing that is conspicuously
 \nold-fashioned. “Everything was as it would have appeared\nin VERMEER
 ’S HOLLAND of the baroque Golden Age\, apart from one\nanachronism\, a 
 Folger’s electric perc coffee can.” In this latest\nseries of acrylics
  on canvas\, the  exploring the theme of\nanachronistic imagery\, specifi
 cally morphing Kodachrome color slides\nof the 1960’s\, with appropriate
 d imagery from the Dutch Golden Age.\nCharacters and objects depicted by p
 ainters such as Vermeer\,\nRembrandt\, and Hals\, will be transported to m
 id 20th century Coney\nIsland\, for instance. Gary’s work is a form of 
 POP hyper realism\ncombined with the sensibility of the social realists of
  the Ashcan\nSchool such as Edward Hopper and Reginald Marsh\, along the w
 ay tipping\ntipping his hat to David Hockney and the aforementioned Dutch 
 Masters.\nSchwartz grew up in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn New Yor
 k in\nthe 1960’s and 1970’s\, where his father was employed as the\nma
 nager of the world famous Nathan’s hotdog empire. This gritty\nlandscape
  has had an enormous influence on the art that he creates\ntoday in 2022.
        Biography and Artist Statement “In my\nstudio practice I am c
 onsidered a Social Realist painter\, although\nDeborah Solomon of The New 
 York Times once referred to my style as POP\nRealism. Utilizing a very str
 ong narrative in each series that I\ncreate\, my current body of work cons
 ists of acrylics on canvas\,\ndepicting my childhood memories of Coney Isl
 and\, where I grew up\, as\nwell as my travels abroad and throughout the U
 S. The works utilize\ncontemporary realism with an homage to Dutch and Fle
 mish baroque\npaintings. When not in the studio\, I can be found at York P
 rep School\non the upper west side of Manhattan\, where for the past seven
  years I\nhave been employed as their 6th through 12th grade art teacher
 . I am\ncurrently completing my 27ear of full time art teaching\, having w
 orked\nin some of Manhattan’s finest independent schools. I received my 
 BFA\nfrom the  New York School of Visual Arts in 1983.” Venue: Rehoboth
