SUMMARY:ARTifact: Assemblage by Tim Barton
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:“I am compelled. I can’t stop whatever this creative force
is\nwithin me. I am constantly amazed about the amount of objects we\nhuma
ns have created over time\, just untold millions and millions of\nobjects\
, and some of them have found new purpose within my art work. I\nam fixate
d with finding the new perfect artifact or object to use\nwithin my art an
d spend many happy hours treasure hunting. When I\ncreate a piece I first
start by assembling a few objects from my hoard\nwhich in my mind intuitiv
ely relate to each other\, in either form\,\ncolor\, or function. I add or
subtract items along the way till I\ncomplete the composition. I then bui
ld a housing to reflect the\ncomposition. As I assemble them\, an idea beg
ins\, fuzzy at first\, but\nover time solidifies in my mind. This idea is
used to create the title\nof the piece. I try and keep the titles more gen
eral to be used as the\njumping off point for the viewer to inject their o
wn thoughts and\nexperiences into the work. This allows for their own inte
rpretations\,\nand many times new interpretations. Although I may not have
intended a\nviewers idea about the piece the viewers thoughts are indeed
relevant\nand have as much merit as my original idea that created the piec
 e. I\nam influenced by my own experiences and thoughts but as I have found
\nmost thoughts have been thought by others and in this way I think my\nar
twork has a universality to it.” –Tim Barton Tim Barton\,\nformally of
Philadelphia\, has been living in Lewes\, DE since October\n2021. He rece
ived his AA in Fine Arts from the State University of New\nYork in 1998 wh
ile enrolled in the Enlisted Educational Advancement\nProgram when he was
enlisted in the US Navy Submarine Force from 1981\nto 2001. After retiring
from the Navy he obtained his Senior Reactor\nOperators License from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and has since\nworked at the Salem Nuclear P
ower Plant in Southern New Jersey and\nrecently retired from Constellation
Energy as a Lead Emergency\nPreparedness Specialist. Tim has been making
and showing art since\n1996 and has settled on 3D construction and found o
bject sculpture as\nhis current art form. He has shown in juried shows alo
ng the east\ncoast and has work in several large collections as well as ma
ny\nprivate collections. His most recent awards are The Sarah Ethel\nTunne
ll Best in Show at the Rehoboth Art League 85th Annual Members\nShow in 20
23 as well as the 2024 11th Regional Juried Biennial\nExhibition Jurors Aw
ard of Excellence also at the Rehoboth Art League.\nOne of his inspiration
s\, discovered during his college time\, is the\nassemblage artist Joseph
Cornell. Unlike Cornell though Tim constructs\nall of the boxes\, cabinets
\, and frames himself. Frequently his process\nincludes a finished treatme
nt that reflects a presence of age that\nprovides an immediate sense of hi
story and nostalgia to the piece.\nWithin these cases he arranges a compos
ition of artifacts and found\nobjects that reflect a relationship to each
other and to a common\ntheme. Tim spends many days scouring antique shops\
, antique malls\, as\nwell as auction houses locally and across the countr
y for unique items\nthat speak to him or as he says items “I know I can
use”. His work\nfinds him reaching back in time\, and exploring aspects
of his life in\nunique ways\, searching for themes in his human experience
that all can\nrelate to. Tim Barton maintains a membership with the Rehob
oth Art\nLeague as well as the Internationally recognized Philadelphia Dum
pster\nDivers artist organization. Venue: Rehoboth Art League.
