SUMMARY:CONSTRUCTIONS
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:All artists create work\, but only some construct it! Peninsula
\nGallery’s July 2025 exhibition asks viewers to observe how five\nartis
 ts — Joseph Barbaccia\, Melanie Berry\, Peggy Black\, Carol\nLehmann\, J
ason Lyons — piece together a puzzle of seemingly\narbitrary objects to
create a whole work of art. This showcase\, which\ncombines 2-D and 3-D ar
twork\, puts emphasis on the physicality of the\nart-making process\, allo
wing visitors to explore the many intricacies\nfeatured in each of the 42
original works. “Constructions” is on\ndisplay from July 5th to the 27
th only at the Lewes-based gallery. \n     An opening reception will b
e held on Saturday\, July 5\, from 5\nto 6:30 pm\, which is free and open
to everyone. Enjoy a night out on\nthe town with whimsical art and complim
entary food and drinks. Joseph\nBarbaccia is an artist working in a variet
y of mediums from his home\nand studio in Georgetown\, DE. He is inspired
by his personal history\nand the world around him\, using his art as a me
ans to grapple with and\nmake sense of his experiences. His artistic proce
ss involves\nexperimentation and exploration\, pushing the boundaries of h
is chosen\nmedium. Joe constructs the works for this show through Polymer
Clay\, a\nversatile and forgiving medium that allows him to create intrica
te\ndetails and textures in his art. He uses the medium to create a\nvarie
 ty of scenes\, including animal portraits\, local landscapes\, and\nstill
lives\, as well as a special stained glass-style piece. Melanie\nBerry beg
 an her career as a time-based media artist\, focusing on\ncreating films t
hat reflected daily life as rhythmic sequences of\ncolor and shape. Eventu
ally\, she moved away from filmmaking and\ntowards practical artmaking. Sh
e uses common\, everyday materials to\ncreate pieces with strong ties to d
ecorative art and popular craft.\nAlthough repurposed\, her materials are
still recognizable as objects\nmade for another use\, suggesting that mean
ing and value can be found\nby looking at something in a different way. In
this exhibition\,\nMelanie’s mosaic designs are rooted in the Gibson Gi
rl archetype —\na century-old symbol of idealized womanhood preserved in
the American\npsyche and reproduced on the china plates that are broken a
nd\nreassembled to make each artwork.  Margaret Black is a full-time\ntex
tile studio artist in rural Jenner Township\, Pennsylvania\, who\nstudied
under acclaimed quilter Nancy Crow for 10 years. She is an\nimprovisationa
l machine piecer\, creating original art without using\nrulers or measurem
ents. Rhythm and repetition\, as well as abstract\nline patterning\, are a
t the core of her designs. During the past\nseveral years\, she has been d
yeing her own fabrics using wringer\nwashers and MX dyes. Additionally\, s
he also utilizes surface design\ntechniques using thickened dyes with scre
en printing\, paper\nlamination\, monoprinting\, and shibori. For “Const
ructions\,”\nMargaret is featuring two extra-large quilt works from her\
n“Critter” series. These pieces — one monochromatic and the other\na
colorful explosion of rust\, plum\, and navy — use geometric shapes\nan
d patchwork to create striking wall-hanging art.   Largely\nself-taught\
, Carol Lehmann believes that the art of craft is not just\na ‘nice’ a
ctivity — it transforms\, connects\, and empowers her to\nexplore differ
ent mediums and techniques without reserve. Based near\nthe Delaware Bay\,
her growing portfolio of work now includes works of\nencaustic\, collage\
, sculpture\, and creating unique copper enameled\njewelry. For this exhib
ition\, Carol is displaying two different types\nof constructed art. Five
pieces utilize collage to create whimsical\nscenes of famous artists’ ho
mes\, which combine the famed artist’s\niconic style with Carol’s ecle
ctic imagination. Her other five\npieces are 3-D sculptures that create th
eir stories through found\nobjects and tucked-away details. Through an inh
erent passion for the\ndiscarded object\, Jason Lyons has developed a uniq
ue perspective and\ntalent to visually dissect\, re-interpret\, and then r
e-purpose the\nmaterials found in his sculptures. He creates his work from
discarded\,\nman-made objects that come together to form sculptures of na
tural\nthings\, such as flowers\, birds\, fish\, and insects. He finds uni
que\nshapes buried within the objects\, reinterpreting them into the\nanat
omical structures that make up the larger work. \n“Constructions” is
on display from July 5-27. Works from the show\ncan be previewed at www.pe
ninsula-gallery.com and are available for\npre-sale.  The gallery is loca
ted in the Shops at the Beacon\, 520\nEast Savannah Rd. Lewes\, DE\, and i
 s open Tue-Sat 10-5\, and Sun 11-3.\nVenue: Peninsula Gallery.
