DESCRIPTION:For the fourth year\, Peninsula Gallery brings the larger-than-
 life\nimpressionist paintings of prolific artist Dane Tilghman to Lewes\,\
 ngiving admirers the opportunity to bask in the grandeur of his\ncolorful 
 and soulful paintings.  Dane Tilghman grew up in West\nChester\, PA\, and
  has been a professional artist for nearly 40 years.\nHis family was origi
 nally from Tilghman Island in the Chesapeake Bay\nbefore migrating to Dove
 r and finally settling in Pennsylvania. Dane\nis a premier painter of Afri
 can American culture\, whose work is in\nnumerous universities and major s
 ports arenas\, in addition to being\ncollected by celebrities like Nelson 
 Mandela. The ethos of his work is\nto bring awareness and attention to the
  lost history of African\nAmerican communities throughout the US. Dane emb
 races an extravagant\nstyle and color palette to make Black life and cultu
 re from the early\n20th Century the centerpiece of artistic admiration. He
  isn’t\nconfined by artistic rules or forms\, opting to combine qualitie
 s of\ncubism\, impressionism\, and realism with palette knife work and var
 ious\nmediums to create textural pieces that come to life on the canvases.
  \nHe is inspired by historic black and white images\, transforming a onc
 e\nstatic and unidimensional photograph into a vibrant and profound\npaint
 ing. For this show\, Dane has painted a variety of Black\ntradesmen\, from
  musicians to farmers\, oyster fishermen and field\nworkers\, while also c
 apturing the sincerity and simplicity of family\,\nfriendship\, and solitu
 de. His powerful\, yet poignant\, works remind\nviewers of the importance 
 of caring for people of all colors and\ncreeds\, not only in history but i
 n the present and the future. Dane\nsays\, “Black people played just as 
 much a role in the lifeblood of\nDelaware as anywhere else. The working-cl
 ass individuals depicted in\nmy work\, whether they be working on the sea 
 or a farm\, were\nfamily-oriented\; they had a purpose and were here to ma
 ke a mark —\neven if that was just to make sure there was food on their 
 table. But\nI believe everybody has a purpose. These individuals probably 
 didn’t\nthink they would be immortalized on canvas\, but they lived and 
 served\nhistory just like anyone else.” Dane Tilghman’s solo exhibitio
 n is\non display from February 18th to March 25th. Works from the show can
