SUMMARY:Deciphering Stratums: A View Beyond the Surface--Works by Moritz Ke
 llerman and Katiana Jarbath Smith
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Self-reflection and awareness are heightened in our current tim
es. Now\nmore than ever\, people are understanding that seeing others is n
ot a\nsimple matter of seeing color or gender or any other visual\ndescrip
tor\, but of taking the time to see other’s experiences.\nPeople are mor
e than their surface. The whole person is the complex\nculmination of laye
rs of lived experiences. Paintings\, a culmination\nof layers\, are symbol
ic of this complexity. Further\, how does\nindividual history influence pe
rspectives and interpretations about\nothers or major events in society? T
his two-person exhibition will\nfeature two-dimensional paintings by Nicar
 agua-born Jewish American\npainter\, Moritz Kellerman and first-generation
Haitian American\npainter\, Katiana Jarbath- Smith. Moritz’s abstract p
ieces of\nstratums of color invite viewers to question their thoughts and\
nfeelings provoked by the title of the artwork. What colors beneath the\ns
urface are seen? How did the colors and mediums interact with each\nother
to form what is seen? Katiana’s pieces will invite viewers to\nquestion
the lived experience of its subject. What experiences of the\nsubject can
be seen in the painting? How do the colors and composition\nhelp to reveal
those experiences?  Each pairing of the artists’\nworks will invite vi
ewers to interpret the history of a people\, social\nconstructs and even n
ations. What aspect(s) of the nation’s history\nis presented? What are t
he layers that have led to that history? How\nmight the artists’ heritag
es have influenced their perspective of\nthat history? How might the viewe
r’s history influence their\nperspective of that history? In inviting vi
ewers to delve beyond the\nsurface of each piece\, the artists aim to remi
nd viewers of the value\nof exploring the complexity of individual and col
 lective history.\nVenue: Rehoboth Art League.
