SUMMARY:Delaware Art Museum | Pyle and the Pre-Raphaelites
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about Pyle and the Pre-Raphaelites\, an exhibiti
on that\nbrings together two of the Delaware Art Museum's signature\ncolle
ctions: the foundation collection of work by Howard Pyle\, the\nartist who
created an American illustration tradition\, and Samuel\nBancroft's colle
ction of British Pre-Raphaelite art\, which is the\nlargest concentration
of Pre-Raphaelite work outside of the United\nKingdom. The exhibition prem
iers new research that reveals that Pyle\nand Bancroft were far more inter
twined than previously recognized and\nthat Pyle was inspired by the Pre-R
aphaelites before Bancroft began\nacquiring their artwork in 1890. The lec
ture will examine Pyle's\nillustrations for stories set in the Medieval an
d Early Renaissance\neras alongside works by Pre-Raphaelite artists and th
 eir followers\,\nincluding Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, Edward Burne-Jones\, W
alter Crane\,\nand William Morris. This presentation articulates the exten
t which\nPyle was inspired by Pre-Raphaelite compositions he encountered e
arly\nin his career as well as Bancroft's collection and demonstrates how\
nPyle's exposure to original works of Pre-Raphaelite art shaped the\nbirth
and flourishing of American illustration.  The talk will be\npresented b
y DelArt Curatorial Associate Katherine Feldkamp\, who\ncurated Pyle and t
he Pre-Raphaelites. She graduated with a master's\ndegree in Art history f
rom the University of Delaware\, and previously\nserved as the Research As
sistant for the Decorative Arts and Design\nDepartment at the Saint Louis
Art Museum. Image credit: So for a\nHeart-beat She Saw Him (detail)\, 1905
