SUMMARY:Four Legged Friends Art Exhibition
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Who let the dogs out? The Peninsula Gallery did! For its June 2
025\nexhibition\, the Lewes-based gallery will be displaying 35 imaginativ
e\nrenditions of our furry companions. “Four Legged Friends” includes\
npaintings of different breeds and species — both real and\nmake-believe
  — of cats and dogs from artists Angi Beauheim\, Molly\nSanger Carpenter
 \, Inna Dzhanibekova\, Andrea Kelly\, Rebecca Scheuer\,\nJudy Verhoeven\,
and Nancy Richards West.   An opening reception will\nbe held on Saturday
\, May 31\, from 5 to 6:30 pm\, which is free and open\nto everyone. Enjoy
a night out on the town with whimsical art and\ncomplimentary food and dr
inks. Attendees will have the opportunity to\nmingle with some of the show
’s participating artists.  Rebecca\nScheuer is the only artist in this
exhibition who uses a realistic\napproach to creating her pampered pooches
 . Despite this\, her puppy\nportraits have a playful demeanor\, as each is
  dressed in different\nattire. Derby hats\, bathrobes\, and Mr. Roger’s
cardigan adorn the\ncritters in Scheuer’s images. Angi Beauheim and Judy
Verhoeven match\nScheuer’s whimsy with their stylized imagery. Beauheim
dreams up\nfelines as part of the cosmos\, envisioning them as different
planets\nlike the Earth\, Moon\, and Uranus. For the first time\, she has
also\nincluded an outer space dog\, who is playing fetch with the moon bal
l.\nVerhoeven uses recycled paper — such as newspapers\, old books\, map
s\,\nand sewing patterns — acrylic paint\, and other mixed media materia
ls\nto create images that evoke childlike wonderment. Her pups and kittens
\nare accentuated by colorful backgrounds of quirky motifs and uplifting\n
verbiage.                Molly Sanger Carpenter and Nancy\nRichard
s West craft their animals using unconventional mediums. Sanger\nCarpenter
produces fairytale-like mosaics that communicate a detailed\nstory throug
h elements made out of mixed media\, glass\, and gold. For\nthis show\, sh
e is displaying her mythical merdogs and mercats\, in\naddition to collage
versions of regal poodles and cubist mixed breeds.\nThe ancient Asian art
of Sumi-e or ink-wash painting is the basis for\nRichards West work. Whil
e family pets are featured\, there are also\nother varieties of felines an
 d canines\, such as tigers\, lions\, and\nfoxes.  Inna Dzhanibekova and A
ndrea Kelly don’t necessarily make\ntheir animals the center of their pa
intings\; rather\, they depict the\nfluffy family members within their eve
ryday locations.\nDzhanibekova’s images capture house cats in their natu
 ral\nenvironment: lounging on the couch\, exploring hidden corners\, and\n
prowling the neighborhood. Her bold scenes focus on interiors and\narchite
 ctural design. Similarly\, Kelly’s pets are pictured with\ntheir humans\
, expressing the joy of spending time with their four\nlegged companions.
Her pieces have elements of fauvism\, particularly\nin her use of blocky c
olors and elongated shapes. “Four Legged\nFriends” is on display from
May 31 to June 29. Works from the show\ncan be previewed at www.peninsula-
gallery.com and are available for\npre-sale.  The gallery is located in t
he Shops at the Beacon\, 520\nEast Savannah Rd. Lewes\, DE\, and is open T
 ue-Sat 10-5\, and Sun 11-3.\nVenue: Peninsula Gallery.
