Aug 14, 2022
Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song is a documentary that chronicles the lows and eventual redemption of the songwriter behind Hallelujah. This film weaves together three creative strands: The songwriter and his times; the song’s dramatic journey from a record label reject to chart-topping hit; and moving testimonies from major recording artists such as Brandi Carlile, Eric Church, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan and many others impacted by the personal touchstone that is “Hallelujah.” Approved for production by Leonard Cohen just before his 80th birthday (2014), Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song accesses a wealth of never-before-seen archival materials from the Cohen Trust. Viewers will gain entry to Cohen’s personal notebooks, journals, photographs, performance footage, and extremely rare audio recordings and interviews. [2021, US, 95 min, Rated: PG-13] Carey-Ann Pawsey of Orca Sound remarks, “No matter what you think you knew about the man you learn more because of the great song. A great song that just keeps giving.” David Stratton of The Australian says, “Fans of Leonard Cohen, and there are millions of them, will be enthralled by this portrait of “a kind of modern minstrel.” Venue: Cinema Art Theater.
