SUMMARY:Inside\, Outside: Interactions Between Buildings and Spaces
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:This September\, the Peninsula Gallery welcomes an architectura
 l\npainting show\, featuring five unique painters. “Inside\, Outside”\
nexplores our interactions between buildings and spaces\, using\ndifferent
artistic styles and mediums.  The works in this show depict\nfamous loca
tions like the skyline in New York City and St. Peter’s\nBasilica in Rom
 e. But the majority of the pieces pay homage to\nfamiliar places found in
small towns all across the world. From ballet\nrehearsals to ice cream dat
es\, local diners\, and nostalgic motel\nsigns\, these works will transpor
t you to a new location far beyond\nLewes.  “While this show does focus
on the geometric design of\narchitecture\, the true essence behind each w
ork is the “lived-in”\nquality of the spaces. You can feel\, in all th
e artist's works\, the\nquality time spent both in and out of these buildi
ngs\,” says Shelby\nCooke\, our public relations manager.  Born and rai
sed in the New York\nCity metropolitan area\, artist John Aquilino has bee
n a working artist\nfor 20 years. His work has earned many accolades\, inc
luding five\ngrants\, four awards from the Maryland State Arts Council’s
\nIndividual Artist program\, and an individual artist grant from the\nArt
s and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. John’s work brings\na gra
phic element to cityscapes\, creating an intimate connection with\nbuildin
gs through intense precision and detail. Roger Dellar is a\nprofessional a
rtist\, who works from his home studio in Surrey\,\nEngland. He visits the
United States frequently\, and the Peninsula\nGallery is his only America
n venue. Roger’s art reflects his keen\ninterest in people\, their behav
ior\, and how the play of light\ntransforms a subject. His paintings captu
re everyday situations in\npublic spaces\, usually done plein air. For “
Inside\, Outside\,”\nRoger has painted iconic locations like the histori
c Petworth House in\nSouthern England\, as well as scenes known all too we
ll for Britons:\ndrinks in the pub.   Christine Heyse is self-taught in
watercolors\,\nhaving earned a bachelor's in Nursing Science and worked as
an\nEmergency Department Nurse early in her career. But she has been\ndra
wing and painting her whole life\, with her love of art having been\nencou
raged by her father\, who was an industrial designer in New York.\nDuring
a hiatus\, while raising her three children\, she took classes in\noil por
traiture and became a Registered Copyist at the National\nGallery of Art i
 n Washington\, DC\, before discovering watercolor.\nChristine paints commo
n subjects\, transforming them through colorful\nlight and shadow. Emily T
hompson attended the prestigious High School\nof Art & Design and earned h
er Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the\nSchool of Visual Arts in New Yor
 k. She is a nationally recognized\,\naward-winning artist. Through her pai
nting\, she documents the iconic\,\nthe disappearing\, and the abandoned e
lements of the American identity.\nEmily’s pieces in this show are fille
d with wonderfully nostalgic\nbuildings and signs. Her street scenes take
you back to the post-WWII\nyears with their vintage automobiles and motels
.  C. Mercedes Walls\ngrew up in New York and New England\, eventually se
ttling in lower\nDelaware\, and raising a family with her husband Bill. Sh
e received a\nBA in Sociology from SUNY Stonybrook and worked as a probati
on and\nparole officer for ten years\, all the while pursuing her passion
for\npainting. Mostly self-taught\, her biggest fan and first teacher was\
nher maternal grandfather\, a shoemaker. A signature member of the\nDelawa
re Watercolor Society\, a Delaware By Hand Master Artist\, and a\nfounding
member of the Mispillion Art League\, Cathy exhibits widely in\nthe regio
n\, winning numerous awards. The works featured in “Inside\,\nOutside”
are populated with families and friends\, reminding us of\nthe space wher
e we share togetherness.  “Inside\, Outside” is on\ndisplay from Sept
ember 3rd to 25th. Works from the show can be\npreviewed at www.peninsula-
gallery.com and are available for\npre-sale.  A reception will be held on
  Saturday\, September 3\, from 5\nto 6:30 pm\, with some of the show’s
 artists in attendance.\nCall (302) 645-0551 or email peninsulagallery1@

hoppes at\nthe Beacon Inn\, 520 East Savannah Rd. Lewes\, DE\, and is ope
