SUMMARY:Running of the Bull
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:A quarter of a century ago\, Michael McDonnell was in his mid-t
wenties\nand feeling revelrous when he and a beach house full of his cohor
ts\ndecided to enact their own wacky version of Pamplona’s Running of\nt
he Bulls in an unassuming bar in Dewey Beach. None of them could have\nant
icipated that inaugural run down the beach with the bull in a\ncostume in
June\, 25 years ago\, would ultimately become Dewey Beach’s\nown “drun
k uncle” version of Pamplona’s long held tradition…\n\nMcDonnell ref
lects\, “It’s crazy to me… because the math caught\nup to me the oth
er day\, and it’s been so many years. In October I\nturn 52\, and I’ve
now been doing this half my life.”\n\nMcDonnell explains that as the Ru
nning of the Bull grew from that\nfirst year\, there were a couple of tipp
ing points that really kept the\nmomentum going. The first was the year wh
en Steve “Monty”\nMontgomery took over ownership of the Starboard\, an
d the event turned\nfrom a beach house tradition into being managed by the
establishment\,\nand it became exponentially bigger. The other was when\,
on the\nprecipice of the 10th Anniversary\, the Washington Post ran a sto
ry in\ntheir Style Section on the event.\n\nSince its inception\, it has g
rown into an event that includes a fly\nover\, a charitable event that ove
r the years has raised a ton of\nmoney\, and even become a multigeneration
al affair! Says McDonnell\,\n“We now have kids who were two years old wh
en their parents were\nforming the culture around the Running of the Bull\
, who are in\nattendance at the event. That always blows my mind!”\n\nOv
er the years\, the Running of the Bull has pulled a ton of stunts\,\nespec
ially as it relates to the matadors. They have had celebrities\,\nbrew mas
ters\, and politicians fight the bull. They saw their way\nthrough the leg
end of the lost girl—who is still missing somewhere\nout there in Americ
 a. They have had multiple radio personalities show\nup to commentate the f
ights. And of course\, there have been a slew of\nElvis impersonators. So
what\, you ask\, might be in store for the 25th\nAnniversary of this iconi
c local event?\n\nThe answer to that is: show up to find out! This is an e
vent where\nMontgomery and McDonnell like to pull out surprises and keep t
he\ncrowds guessing! It’s all part of the silly charm of this eventful\n
weekend!\n\nCome out on Saturday\, June 25th\, wear your Pamplona style re
d and\nwhite\, and prepare to see hundreds of imbibed participants stumble
\,\nfumble\, and generally run in a forward motion from two men in a bull\
ncostume. This is going to be a year to remember\, so don’t miss out!\nA
nd if you’ve got your kids in the vicinity of the Dewey area that\nweeke
nd\, take a step in the direction of “raisin’ ‘em right\,”\nand co
me out to the kids’ version of the event\, between the\nDagsworthy and N
ew Orleans street beaches\, 10:30AM on June 25th!\n\nWe’ll see you there
