SUMMARY:Transcendent: Landscapes of the Hudson River School presented by Jo
 seph Lewis Soler II
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Take a behind-the-scenes look at the Delaware Art Museum’s fa
ll\nspecial exhibition\, Transcendent: Landscapes of the Hudson River\nSch
ool. Drawn primarily from the rich collections of The New York\nHistorical
and supplemented with key loans from public and private\ncollections\, th
e show introduces visitors to the tradition of\nlandscape painting that fl
ourished in the United States in the middle\ndecades of the nineteenth cen
tury. Transcendent explores these\nnationally beloved paintings through th
e lens of Transcendentalism\, a\n19th-century movement that emphasized the
spiritual connection between\nhumans and the natural world. The exhibitio
n also examines the belief\nof period artists\, writers\, and theologians
who viewed nature to be\nthe primary locus of the divine. Though they do n
ot overtly illustrate\nreligious scenes or texts\, Hudson River School pai
ntings were created\nby deeply religious artists who understood their work
s to reflect\ntheir faith.\n\nThe talk will be presented by Joe Soler\, Ph
.D.\, who serves as\nDelArt’s Gallery Learning Assistant. He received hi
s master’s\ndegree and doctorate in Urban Education from Temple Universi
ty. Prior\nto DelArt\, he held a number of positions at the University of\
nPennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and is an adjunct\npr
 ofessor at two colleges.\n
