DBG Lecture Series: FLORA, An Evening with Bill McAvoy, former DE State Botanist

The Delaware Botanic Gardens is excited to continue its lecture series in 2026.  Join us on April 16th as Delaware's former state botanist, Bill McAvoy shares his knowledge of the flora of our beautiful state with how it connects to the Delaware Botanic Gardens.

Lecture title:  "Delaware's Coastal Plain Habitats, Plant Communities, and Associated Flora 

Lecture description:  95% of Delaware's land area lies within the Atlantic Coastal Plain, which includes the Delaware Botanical Gardens. The habitats and plant communities of Delaware's Coastal Plain are diverse and support a flora rich in species that includes many that are state and globally rare. This presentation describes many of these habitats and plant communities and highlights some of the common and rare plants that are associated with them.

About the speaker:  Delaware native, Bill is recently retired after 35 years, where he served as the botanist for the Delaware Dept. of Natural Resources. Bill was responsible for documenting the flora of Delaware, with an emphasis on rare species. Bill has published many papers on the habitats and rare plants of Delaware, as well as publishing his floristic studies of the Delmarva Peninsula. Bill is also the primary author of the online flora of Delaware.

Doors open at 5 PM, and the lecture starts at 5:30 PM, with Q+A to follow. Light refreshments will be provided.
